I know we have all thought of it, of how great it would be for CS5 to be available for the iPad.  We have already seen what Wacom did with their tablets so why not Apple? Im guessing it could either be that these programs are just too strong for the iPad, or its actually in the works and they are trying to milk it with the first and second gen iPad.

To be honest, Im not sure I would enjoy using a touch screen to design stuff. After a while it would get tiring and it seems that the risk of arthritis and carpal tunnel heighten, no? Have you ever listened to how many times you click your mouse when you are designing something? I swear we go at 80 clicks per minute. Thats a lot of wear and tear on your hand. LOL

It would extremely  be convenient for those minor touch ups that you need to do before sending it off to the client.

Im sure some of you have those clients that call you outta no where and ask to “just center my logo a little bit more”, and you are no where near your desktop and powering up your laptop takes too long. If you had the iPad just turn it on boom boom boom, send and done. (Yes, that fast lol!!)

I have a friend that works for apple development, and word has it that Apple is working on an Ipad Pro. I got no official specs on it but this may be our answer. We will see. Apparently it wont be out till Fall 2012.

So I guess for now we can just sit and wait and let technology run its course.

Mac vs PC

It has been long debated on which computer is better…Mac or Pc’s.  Well here’s a better question for you: Which computer is better for graphic designers? (cue in dramatic music….)

In the late 90’s I was in college doing a program called Illustration and Design. A hybrid program that taught you everything that has to do with art. From drawing to painting, to airbrushing all the way to  graphic designing. Now in the first semester we started using photoshop 5.5 and illustrator version 8 or 9, on a computer called a Macintosh.

At the time I didnt think it wouldve been such a big deal on which computer you were designing on. And I dont think it really did till maybe around 2002. (this is just a guesstimate of when i started to notice the epic battle starting to brew up)

Now Ive designed on both a pc and a mac and besides the different key combinations for actions, they both perform well……Im lying. I found that working on pc’s, the programs made the computer crash a few times during long hours of work, and this can be due to the fact that Creative Suite programs require a lot of multitasking and RAM. On the other hand, for some reason, a Mac takes care of shit. And I say it like that because based on my experience, my Macbook Pro has probably worked 72 hours straight at most with out even a single reset or glitch. And I stand by Apple because they stand strong even when you abuse them (not physically). But….I’m not knocking PC’s. Yes the Creative Suite programs are more expensive than the actual computer but, its affordable if you cannot dish out the 2000$ for a mac.

I would probably get a pc as a back up should my mbp breaks down. FYI I’ve had my laptop since 2008, and not one problem besides me dropping it which caused the housing to slightly crack.  LOL

And to finally end my biased post on this topic, it seems nowadays that people automatically assume that graphic designers, all have Macs. I dont know how this came about, but let me tell you this. It bothers me a whole lot when i see people with Macbook Pros, and find out that they are not designers. I mean, why do you need such a powerful laptop when the most technical program you use is Excel! Lmao

Mac vs Pc = Cool vs Practical

Homeless Designer…

This goes out to all you graphics designers, illustrators, and painters out there.

There’s this rumor going around that designers come a dime a dozen. And I’ve actually heard that slip out of previous people Ive worked for.

Now here’s our struggle. People seem to believe that what we do is so easy and that it takes no time to finish. What people dont understand is that we have gone through schooling (some of us not), and have lost years of sleep to become this good in order to complete a job in no time. And not to mention develop a sharp sense of imagination so we can mentally put together your design.

Im just gonna go on a small rant and say that I cannot stand when people tell you how much they will pay you for a contract and don’t even ask you if its fair.

Ive been in the game for 9 years and if a client wants to pay me 25$ for a logo, I hand them a stick man.

Side note: Professional Graphic Designer should be paid minimum 30$/hour. MINIMUM. And when I say professional, I mean Professional. Not those people that learned designing of YOUTUBE.  Yall give us a bad name, so go back to the etch a sketch and just stop it!

Now this shirt I have created for all you freelance, or full time 9-5 designers who get underpaid. You know you deserve more. It seems that your artwork is only worth millions once you are dead.

Production for this shirt is now happening and will be available next week. For pre-orders please email me or you can click on the pay pal link which will be available in the link above “Limited Edition”

or just click here

For all you designers out there, heres a little treat. We search the deepest parts of the net to find great sites for vectors, cus’ there are times when us artists do get a little lazy to retrace images on Illustrator. And sometimes hitting that good ol’ “live trace” button just doesnt give you the results you want.

Well here’s some links for you. some of you may know that but those who don’t…..enjoy!

Finding NYC….

So its been nearly a week since i last posted and something and there is a very good reason for that. I went down to New York City for a Mens Fashion Trade show, and to find some sort of inspiration for the upcoming fall lines that I will be working on in the upcoming months.

Now I’m not sure if it was because it was the beginning of the  week when we decided to go, but NYC was sort of quiet. It felt like a friday night in Montreal LOL!

Met lots of people that had nothing to do but complain about the economy. I think its in a way healthy for people to experience a hit like that and as a result,  it woke up some people, because I also met people that are back on the grind, hustling. Meaning, they are going back out there and doing some hard core leg work again. You kind of have to, doesn’t matter what size your business is.

Any how, here’s my weeks report on whats hot in nyc, which is good forecast for all you designers out there. Save yourself a trip to NYC and just read this nutshell of what’s going down. (forgive me if there are any typos, Im an artist not an english teacher.)

DESIGNS FOR MENS FASHION:

As stated earlier this year, the direction of mens graphics is definitely going simple. No more of the Ed Hardy look, which I think only Ed Hardy will be the only one to get away with that look still. No more big prints, for example Affliction tees. Simple.

A good template, or example of what every one is into now, is none other than Ralph Lauren. Everyone is knocking him off, like its going out of style. (pun) But the thing is it won’t. I see this look probably stretching for the next 2-3 years.

Another good line to look at is G-star. If your line is more of the casual city type, this is a good line to look at for inspiration.

I saw a lot of text and font based designs which apparently work well. In other words, dumb it down, you dont have to spend hours on a design or graphic. Just some simple word play with maybe a line stroke here and there would do the job.

Now my buddy and I have found something that we know for sure that will be hot for the upcoming season’s but I  dont think i should put that out there, only because the competition maybe reading this. But dont be too upset, as soon as production is finished, I will definitely let you in on the goods.

Before I end this, I just want to say that its damn expensive to be an artist. And all of you other artist out there know what I’m talking about when I say that because we have to go to anther city, just to find inspiration. We are never satisfied with what we are provided in our own city. But I think thats the beauty of it. We are forced to be explorers.

Lastly, we gotta stop complaining of what’s wrong with business, or anything that you’ve invested in. Start focusing on what a blessing it is to actually have your own business or grind if you will. And you will see that things will start to change. Trust me.

Mr.West

For the past 10 years that I’ve been in the fashion industry, I’ve probably come across over millions of shirts, and I just so happend to come across this shirt right here

Now maybe I might be biased to this, because for one, Kanye is in my top 5 emcees of all time. Anyhow I’m assuming that this shirt came out after the mtv incident.

Well here’s my take on it.

Is it just me or did Taylor Swift not blow up after this? She’s in movies and she gets mad play everywhere (thats what he said, lol)

Yes Kanye can be super extra at times but that’s just his personality. This guy is a true artist. His vision for his videos are remarkable, and not to mention his music. Dude has Elton John, Alicia Keys, Fergi, Kid Cudi, and Rihanna all in one track! Who else can pull that off?

I’ve heard peoples takes on the situation (which I know was like 2 years ago) and it really is a mix bag of opinions.

But I stand by my dude and say Kanye West is not a “douche”

cowabunga dude…

So here is the latest work I’ve done for a client. I’ve provided the step b step photos. I have to admit that I enjoyed painting this shirt because for one: big tmnt fa over here! Two: michaelangelo is my favorite. And three::it provide me with the challenge of not doing the cartoon version but the movie version.

Now just a side note, I’m one to always keep learning new things so I watch youtube videos on some of the greatest airbrush artist’s do their thng. And I’ve learned how to bring portraits to life by adding certain highlights with accent colors. Youtube can actually serve a good purpose, huh?

Cheers

posted on my trustworthy blackberry.

So this past weekend I went to see the Green Hornet. Now you would think that a movie with Seth Rogan would just be a comedy that you might be able to just wait till it comes on DVD. But I beg to differ. I for a fact enjoy Seth Rogan movies. The guy is straight up funny. But what caught my eye with this movie is the artwork that was included. In one of the scenes they go through the Nato’s sketch book, and it had drawings of car designs that reminded me of Chip Foose, famous hot rod shop owner and automotive designer that you may recall from the show “Overhaulin”on TLC. Now these sketches may not be drawn by him but it sure did inspire me to write this post on him. Foose’s sketches are amazing as you can see in the pics. To me its his stlye and sketch lines that bring the drawing to life.

My cousin had bought a  replica of the one of his sketches….and by sketch i really mean a rough draft of some sort not fully colored, for 150$. I myself would grab it off google images and just print it, but…you gotta respect the artist right? lol

Go check him out at http://www.chipfoose.com

and definitely go check out Green Hornet.

BACK TO BASICS

I know all of you have notice that everyone in the tshirt business has been doing the oversize prints and have been killing it for the past year and a half. Affliction and  Ed Hardy I can say made this look popular. Now you have different brands knocking it off. WHY? Cus it sells so why not do what the big boys do, right?

Well Im here to tell you, that working in the fashion industry, alot of buyers and stores have been tired of this look and are looking for something new. The new upcoming look is now plain and simple. You will start seeing a lot of type based shirts this year and probably for the up coming seasons. Also to keep an eye on is the pixelated/digital look. Almost a mix between 80s video game effect mixed with fancy fonts. You will still have some type of image in the design but not as big.

Also what will play a big role is the color combination. I’m seeing a lot of yellow coming into play. Purples, but not the Royal purple thats been killed last year but a lighter purple. As usual your cool greys, and pastels will still be hot.

A great brand to keep an eye on and that is always on the ball with trends is Ralph Lauren & Hugo Boss.

If you are a designer like me, I always go through the pages of certain sites for design ideas (ideas, as in inspiration, never knock off another brands look. that will just make you a fake artist)

And for colors, here’s my secret: SNEAKER FREAKER MAG.

I would look at the up and coming shoes and see what colors they use and try to create a shirt that would match it.

Enjoy

TOP 5 “I REMEMBER” SHOES

All those who know me, know that I’m a big sneaker head. The thing about my collection is that I dont buy the hottest Jordans nor do I cop the hottest air max’s. I’m the type of collector that can look at a shoe and 10 years down the line it will be posted in a blog post such as this one, and people will say “daaamn, I remember those”.

Well although only two of these entries were in my collection, the rest brought back sort of a nostalgic feeling, reminding me of my mushroom haircut days, and playing basketball trying to do the Shawn Kemp spin off the base line…….#reflection….lol

Now in no particular order, I present to you….I Remember:

The Shawn Kemp’s. Reebok’s Kamikaze

I remember seeing them in the Slam Magazines and thought how ugly the shoes were that I wanted them so badly. Not to mention Shawn Kemp was my favorite player back then.

Maybe I havent been keeping up with kicks news, but if they haven’t yet, they need to bring these back. Like soon

The Patrick Ewing’s. If you didn’t have a pair you were non-existant. lol. I think these were a flag of New York City but on your shoes. I also think these were what birth the coolness in the color purple. (maybe not. lol)

Dikembe Mutombo’s.

Some one please educate me but did Adidas make this shoe? Cus I remember buying them at a Payless back in the day, and I know damn well Adidias’ do not sell at Payless.

I just love the tribal African inspired details. I have pics of me wearing these kicks, which I would love to show, but it would expose my mushroom hair cut.

Now who can forget the Magic Johnson shoes.

Plain, simple, and an instant classic.

I remember getting them, and thinking of how cool I was, cus no one had a clue in my elementary school who Magic Johnson was, and why I was wearing his shoes. Damn I was so cool.

Last but not least, we got the Grant Hill’s.

They came in the low and High tops, but in my opinion the Hightops are always cooler, that and if you got the low tops it meant you didnt have the extra 20$ to spend on the high-tops. lol

When I played in these shoes, I dont know if it was just me, but I felt like I could jump higher. ( dont judge me!!)

Well there you have it. My top 5 “I remember” shoes.

if i did leave anything out, and I know I did, pls drop me a line.  There’s like a million kicks out there!

enjoy
